Searching for Cars Online (SEO & SEM)

As part of First Rate’s reports on New Zealand’s Leading Websites we compared the search engine demand for “cars for sale” related phrases, and examined NZ’s foremost websites to discover who has the largest search market share online.

Natural Search – Online Market Share

We discovered that with an RBR of almost 70%, TheCarYard.co.nz had the highest market share in the natural search engine results.

The results of First Rate’s research also indicated:

- Online demand for the phrase “cars” has been declining over the past 5 years in New Zealand.

- TheCarYard.co.nz has the highest natural search market share with AutoTrader.co.nz coming a close second.

- With an RBR of almost 50%, TradeMe.co.nz has the highest paid search market share by far, and are able to buy considerable amounts of relevant traffic against very little competition.

Demand for Cars Online

Online search demand fluctuates throughout the day, over the months and right through the year for numerous reasons. Many industries are subject to significant seasonal fluctuations, whilst others experience changes in demand due to new innovations or economic developments.

The chart below illustrates the shifting search demand for the term “cars” in New Zealand over the last five years:

Understanding online demand is critical to a website’s success in the search engines, and is a crucial step in gaining market share from competitors.
